Literally, "Lake湖 West西" referring to Hamana Lake (浜名湖). There are also smaller regions in Hamamatsu called Lake East (湖東), Lake South (湖南) and Lake North (湖北). The mayor of Kosai resisted being absorbed into Hamamatsu and it remains a separate city.
